Major Roles
John Proctor – A local farmer known for his honesty and integrity. He is a tragic hero who struggles with guilt over an affair and ultimately stands up against the mass hysteria.
Elizabeth Proctor – John’s virtuous and composed wife. She is accused of witchcraft and represents moral strength and quiet resilience.
Abigail Williams – Reverend Parris’s manipulative and vengeful niece. She instigates the witch trials by falsely accusing others, driven by jealousy and a desire for power.
Reverend Parris – The paranoid and self-serving minister of Salem. More concerned with his reputation than justice.
Tituba – Reverend Parris’s Barbadian servant. She is the first to be accused of witchcraft and coerced into confessing.
Mary Warren – The Proctors’ current servant. Timid and easily influenced, she gets caught between telling the truth and succumbing to peer pressure.
Thomas Putnam – A wealthy and bitter man who uses the trials to gain land by accusing his neighbors.
Ann Putnam – His wife, haunted by the loss of seven infants. She believes witchcraft is to blame.
Giles Corey – An outspoken and brave elderly farmer. He challenges the court and is ultimately pressed to death for refusing to name a witness.
Rebecca Nurse – A respected and kind older woman falsely accused of witchcraft. Her arrest is a turning point in the play.
Reverend John Hale – A minister and expert in witchcraft. He begins as a firm believer in the trials but comes to see their injustice and fights to save the innocent.
Judge Danforth – The deputy governor and presiding judge over the witch trials. He is stern and believes he is doing God’s work.
Judge Hathorne – A local judge who works alongside Danforth. He is proud and convinced of his righteousness.
Francis Nurse – Rebecca Nurse’s husband. A respected landowner who tries to save his wife and others from false accusations.
